Akron Marriage License Office

The Summit County Probate Court is the only place to get a marriage license in Akron. Both people must show up in person with valid photo ID. You also need documents that prove any prior marriages are over. This means a certified divorce decree or a death certificate.

There is no waiting period for marriage licenses in Ohio under ORC Chapter 3101. You can get married the same day you pick up your license. The license stays valid for 60 days from the date it is issued. If it expires, you have to start over. Both people must be at least 18 years old, or have parental consent if younger. Neither person can be currently married to someone else, and you cannot be nearer of kin than second cousins.

The Akron-Summit County Public Library Special Collections department holds Summit County marriage records on microfilm from 1840 to 1922, along with bride and groom indexes from 1840 to 1943. These can be viewed in person at the library. The collection also includes birth records, death records, and cemetery records for genealogy research.

Historical Akron Marriage Records

Summit County was created in 1840 from parts of Medina, Portage, and Stark counties. Marriage records start from that year. The Ohio History Connection has indexed Summit County marriage records at the Ohio History Center in Columbus.

There is no statewide index for Ohio marriages. You need to know which county the marriage was in. If you are not sure, check the U.S. Federal Census to see where the couple was living around the time of the wedding. The FamilySearch Ohio Vital Records page has free digitized marriage records as part of the Ohio County Marriages collection. A Summit County Marriage Index covering 1840 to 1980 is also available through genealogical research tools.

The Ancestry Ohio Marriage Index covers 1970 to 2007 and includes more than 3 million records from across the state. This is a paid service, but many public libraries offer free access. Marriage records in Ohio are public records under ORC 149.43, so anyone can request them regardless of their relationship to the people named in the record.

Several cities near Akron also have marriage records resources. Cuyahoga Falls is in Summit County and uses the same probate court for marriage licenses. Canton is nearby in Stark County and has its own probate court for marriage records. Cleveland in Cuyahoga County to the north handles marriage records through the Cuyahoga County Probate Court.

If you are searching for older records and do not know the county, keep in mind that Summit County was formed from Medina, Portage, and Stark counties. Records from before 1840 may be in one of those counties instead.
