Lake County Probate Court

The Lake County Probate Court is the official keeper of all marriage records in the county. Judge Mark J. Bartolotta oversees the court. The office is in the West Annex of the Lake County Courthouse at 25 North Park Place in Painesville. The Marriage Department has its own phone line at 440-350-2326. They handle license applications, record returns, and issue certified copies.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The court is closed on all major holidays observed by the county. One thing that sets Lake County apart is that marriage license applications are done online and by appointment only. You cannot just walk in and apply. Lake County Marriage License Process

Getting a marriage license in Lake County follows ORC Chapter 3101. Both parties must appear together. You need valid photo ID. A driver's license or passport works. If either person had a prior marriage, bring the divorce decree or death certificate.
