Licking County Probate Court

The Licking County Probate Court is the only office in the county that handles marriage records. It is at 1 North Park Place in Newark. The Probate Judge oversees the office, and the clerk staff runs daily operations. They issue marriage licenses, record returns after ceremonies, and store original documents. The court also handles estates, guardianships, and other probate matters.

For in-person marriage record requests, you must provide the names of both parties as they existed before the date of marriage and the date of marriage. This is important. The clerk needs those pre-marriage names to search the index correctly. If the license was issued before 1991, the court must have the date of marriage to find the record. Without it, they may not be able to locate your file.

If you are unsure of the county where a marriage took place or do not have the date, you can contact Ohio Vital Statistics at 614-466-2531. They may be able to help you narrow down the search before you contact the Licking County Probate Court.
