How to Search Mentor Marriage Records
The Lake County Probate Court has an online case search tool that covers probate matters including marriage licenses. The Lake County OHGenWeb site also hosts a marriage index from 1985 to the present. This index shows the bride, groom, and file date. Keep in mind the file date could be the application date, the return date, or the date it was entered in the system.
For older Mentor marriage records, there is a separate index covering 1840 to 1915 with over 30,000 entries. Marriages from 1840 to 1955 with scanned images are also on FamilySearch. You need a free account to see those images. From 1840 to about 1854, the application and the return are in separate books. Both are available online through the genealogy sites.
Certified copies of marriage records can be picked up in person at the Probate Court or ordered by mail. Contact the Marriage License Department at 25 North Park Place, P.O. Box 470, Painesville, OH 44077. Include both parties' names and the date of marriage. Under ORC 149.43, marriage records are public and anyone can request them.
Note: Lake County marriage records before 1840 may be found in Geauga County or, for the Chagrin and Willoughby areas, in Cuyahoga County.
